oxalic acid

The Varroa mite (Varroa destructor) is a huge threat to beekeeping and affects beekeeping. For years research has focused on combating this bee pest, but the problem remains. One of the most effective compounds used today to control the population of varroa mites in bee colonies is oxalic acid.

INTERNATIONAL

beekeeper conference

Article presented by engineer Behrouz Karimi for the international beekeeper conference held in Muğla city

Varroa mites feed on the fat body tissue of adult, pupal and larval honey bees and can carry viruses that are particularly harmful to bees (for example, deformed wings and IAPV) and have been associated with associated colony collapse disorder. Studies have shown that neither Varroa mites nor deformed wing virus alone are particularly deadly, but together they can pose an incredible risk to colonies.

Varroa mites were first discovered in Java in 1904, but are now present in all honeybee populations except the Isle of Man. Due to the absence of varroa in the Isle of Man, on 16 February 2015 the EU passed a decision allowing the Isle of Man to block the import of all bee-related materials.

It was discovered in the United States in 1987, in New Zealand in 2000, and in the United Kingdom in 1992.

Australia was free of mites until an infestation was detected during a routine inspection of Newcastle Harbor on 22 June 2022. Eradication is unlikely because no other entry has been eliminated elsewhere in the world.

Bee breeding studies continue to develop resistance against Varroa. The USDA has developed a bee line that uses Varroa-sensitive hygiene to remove breeding mites. This line is now distributed to beekeepers for use as part of integrated pest management programs.
